Project Need

Xcel Energy is proposing to rebuild two substations in Vilas County to increase reliability for the region. The Presque Isle Substation and Rest Lake Substation were originally built in the mid -1900s.  The Company is proposing to replace the existing substations with two new substations called “Boot Lake” and “Chain O Lakes” and connect them with a new 15-mile 34.5 kilovolt transmission line to improve system reliability.

The existing Presque Isle Substation is served by an 11.4 mile 34.5 kv transmission line from the Mine Road Substation near Bessemer, Michigan ; the existing Rest Lake Substation is served by a 13.6 mile 34.5 kV transmission line from Weber Lake Substation near Mercer, Wisconsin. Both existing 34.5 kV transmission lines are ‘radial’ lines, meaning they can only deliver electricity in one direction, and are unable to back-feed power if one of the transmission lines is out of service due to storms in the area or other outage situations. This project will improve electrical service in the area by enabling the system to transfer power from either direction, preventing outages from occurring.
